Unity Rituals.
A unity ritual is a visible moment inside the ceremony where two become one. It is optional, it can be deeply personal, and we will design it around what is meaningful to you. Here are options I have led many times.
Unity candle
Two taper candles — lit beforehand by your mothers or by each of you — are used together to light a single larger candle. A timeless choice that reads beautifully in photographs.
Sand ceremony
Each partner pours a different colored sand into a single vessel. The grains intertwine and cannot be separated again. A favorite for couples with children, who can each pour their own color.
Communion
Receive communion together as your first act as a married couple. Often led with a brief reading; we can include family members or your home pastor in the serving.
Cord of three strands
Three cords — representing the husband, the wife, and Christ — are braided together during the ceremony, drawn from Ecclesiastes 4:12. A meaningful option for couples who want their faith named explicitly in the unity moment.
Foot washing
Each partner washes the other’s feet in a quiet, brief moment of servant-hearted vow before the marriage begins. Drawn from John 13. Powerful in small ceremonies.
Tree planting
Soil from each family’s home is added to a small tree that the couple will plant after the wedding. A wonderful option for outdoor ceremonies and for couples building a new home together.
We will pick the ritual together — or leave it out entirely. A ceremony does not need one to be meaningful.
